  • Somehow this is the first of my stash I’ve opened since the one or two I tried on release. I don’t lack discipline! This is true vin de garde. It will still be solid in another 16 years, easily. Still a deep impenetrable ruby red in color. The tannins have relaxed by now but the fruit is where many Chinons are on day one, or at least where they used to be before people started making Chinon to taste like carbonic Beaujolais. This is the real thing, earth-based and accented with cigar leaf and scorched poblano peppers. But it’s dense, not quite something you’d call monolithic, but there is still much to be chipped away from this rock. In Bordeaux the cabernet franc always gets blended with merlot for flesh and body. This has all that same flesh and body but it didn’t need the merlot. Drink the '03s and '04s if you’ve got 'em… keep holding '05, there is still much payoff ahead.

  • Tasted next to the "regular" 05 Varennes du Grand Clos. Pretty nose with complex and nuanced flavors of dark fruit, cherry, and black pepper. Perfectly balanced palate with red berries, cherries, spices, leather, and good structure. Long finish. Absolutely lovely wine that will likely continue to improve for many years. It was interesting to see how different this was from the regular bottle -- much more nuanced and complex, quite a bit lighter on the palate, and generally quite a bit more interesting. 95+

  • Deep, powerful nose of red and black cherries, leather, black pepper, barnyard, and tart berries. Nice acidity, lots of tannins, tart red fruit, cherries, blood orange, and more leather notes on the palate. Long finish. Excellent wine that will probably continue to improve for some time.

  • couple hour double decant and drunk over another two hours. Only the last hour was this singing the tune of depth with great character of CF, still in need of another 5 years minimum to reveal it's best.

  • Again barnyard aromatics, just as in 2006 FdP. Mild, soft, juicy, with pleasant sweetness, lovely, friendly character. Acidity is high with lemon juice taste. Later develops a taste of pomegranade.
