  • In the 3 years since our last bottle, this has really come together nicely. The crystals on the bottom of the cork and the surprising amount of sediment were foreshadowing the positive evolution.

The nose is fantastic dark cherry with cinnamon & clove, which the palate matched and added tart strawberry and pomegranate. I'd say this has hit it's stride with a few years left. My only problem is we don't have any more from this vintage. Guess I'll have to wait on the '09 and '14 in the cellar.

  • There's a very nice nose of mostly red with a little dark fruit and a hint of cinnamon from the pull of the cork into the decanter. It has a surprising amount of semi-pungent fruit on the palate, including red raspberry, tart strawberry, and a little pomegranate. The acidity is medium+ and the tannins are much lighter than I expected from a 2005. This might be considered a fruit bomb as far as Burgundy goes. While it is tasty now, a few more years on the rack might make this very easy drinking as the fruit and acidity become a little more tame. Being a fan of Ponsot and knowing how their Grand Cru CdlR and C-C come together after 2 decades, I have high hopes for this bottle in 4 - 5 years, at which time it might merit 2 or 3 more points.

  • Back to a more sombre, medium-plus intense ruby core with a slightly clearing edge. The medium-plus intense nose shows notes of lavas, iodine minerality and dark fruits. Compared to the previous Coche offering it is quite stern and serious in style. The wine is medium-plus bodied and quite jampacked –if you'll pardon the term– with intense black cherry flavours; indeed to the point of being a-typical. Even the stemmy dried herbaciousness reminds me of Sangiovese in a way. However, the medium-minus tannines are ripe and the medium-plus acidity lends enough freshness, while the stems seem to impart a certain elegance and herbal/spicy complexity on the presently slightly disappointing 15-20 second finish. Since overal balance is quite good and the required matière is present beyond a shadow of a doubt, this wine deserves a year or two to pull itself together. I gave 87 points +2 and guessed Ponsot Cuvée Pinson, which wasn’t too hard given the by now 50/50 odds......... TN Mike de Lange

(Ponsot Bourgogne Cuvée Pinson) Deeply coloured with a twist of purple. Wide, with a high toned and slightly estery nose. The palate is well concentrated and certainly well textured. High-toned, ripe fruit in the mouth with good acidity and good length. There is plenty of wine here, but today I find the high-toned flavour and aroma profile just a little odd (I remember a Dominique Laurent like this), in fact I didn’t want a second glass. Day two was much better - less high-toned and ‘chemical’. I very much enjoyed the last two glasses. A couple of bottles can sleep in the cellar…
