  • 13% alcohol.

Somewhat dark yet quite translucent raspberry red color with a somewhat developed pomegranate hue. Savory and somewhat restrained nose with dry, fine-tuned aromas of fresh linognberries and sour cherries, some woody tones, a little bit of campfire smoke, light sanguine notes of bloody game and a hint of brambly raspberry. Overall the nose feels slightly closed, but relatively youthful for its age. The wine is ripe, medium-bodied and slightly lean on the palate with rather dry flavors of peppery spice, tart lingonberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of savory wood and a hint of brambly raspberry. The wine feels very firm and structured with its high acidity, but the tannins feel quite gentle and easy. The fnish is pretty long with quite light yet still intense flavors of tart lingonberries and cranberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of meaty umami, light notes of wild strawberries and a woody hint of savory oak spice.

A firm, harmonious and relatively light Gevrey-Chambertin that feels lean rather than ripe and flashy with somewhat restrained yet very balanced overall nature. The wine shows surprisingly little evolution at the age 14 years and it is still obviously going uphill - and will be on the ascent for many more years. Obviously not a blockbuster but instead a poised and delicate Pinot Noir that still requires time - or then some food that would coax out some fruit; this paired really well with grouse and mushroom sauce. Perhaps a bit pricey for the style at 65€.

  • Heresztyn 2005 gevrey les champonnets. Another debut wine for me. Preferred wine of the night. Young, but showing nice balance and openness. Good minerality.

  • I feel like I’m drinking the vintage. Mid-ranking growers (like this one) will have to seriously have dropped the ball not to excel in 2005. Ripe fruit plus actually retaining acidity – a divine age-worthy combination. So, here was a wine delivering mouthwatering, ‘juice-ing’ excitement. Nose right now is brandy cherry. Palate no great extension thereof, although an inspiring feel of more trying to peel off it on checking the bottle fully three days later. A couple of non-food mouthfuls gracefully dry the mouth if you stop to look, but that’s no impediment to drinking. Bright, clean, exciting, if tight and uncomplex drinking now. Not (I think) the depth and intensity-of-flavour-potential of a truly great Pinot, but a shot at 94-95 pts in 6+ years. 89-90 now, 89.
