  • From 75cl screwcap. Never happy when I'm the only person on CT posting about a wine. The good news is: it's 2024, one year on from my last bottle, and the oak is finally yielding. Fish and chips weren't available this evening, but with other fried food it did just fine. Still a bit tropical, perhaps a little sweet, but another 12 months should deal with that just fine. Still mystified how I thought this was a 91P wine back on 09.09.2020, but time may tell.

  • From 75cl screwcap. Never happy when I see I'm the only person writing TNs for a wine. Indeed I now think I got this dead wrong on 09.09.2020 (and made the mistake of purchasing half a dozen). Oak, astingency, bitterness; not quite at ease with or harmonising with tropical-fruity, concentrated Siivaner. Perhaps the oak will integrate given a few more years, but right now I greatly prefer the other Eschendorf Silvaners from Horst Sauer I have in the cellar. Try again in 2024, with fried fish and chips, perhaps? 87–88P(?)

  • From 75cl screwcap. At an awkward stage, this is a bit too unresolved-tropically-fruity in relation to its good structure and promising texture. Drink 2023 onwards? NR

  • Sauer - Ziereisen - Jura - Champagne; 9/9/2020-9/16/2020 (Escherndorf - Efringen-Kirchen - Arbois - Cramant/Bouzy/Verzenay): From 75cl traditional Burgundy-style bottle at Horst Sauer tasting room, opened previous day. Raised in barriques, this very serious wine is quite unlike any other Silvaner I have tasted and would be a cunning “pirate” to slip into a blind tasting of lighter, 1. Cru Chablis-style Chardonnay. Fresh oak scent; sparklingly fresh, gently sweet entry; ripe acidity already well integrated on the midpalate, some fine red apple fruit; long finish. This is delicious already, but will surely develop and improve over the next decade. Interestingly, this is the only Silvaner Horst Sauer offers in magnum, double magnum and jeroboam! Fairly priced for 20€ at cellar door. 90-91P(?) (6 views)
