  • This was leaking a little through the cork in my wine fridge sometime in the last few years, so I was concerned about how it would show. I think it was still Ok, because it seemed to show about the same as a bottle from 4 years ago, if I remember correctly.
In any case, this is an intense and ripe Cali Pinot, plenty of tart acidity and loads of bruised fruit. I enjoyed it, but it is an aged unapologetic Cali Pinot, so it is not for everyone and probably not something Burg-heads would enjoy. The cloudiness did not bother me at all and I see it as a feature rather than a bug. The wife did not like it, though.

  • 14.1% abv. Recent auction purchase.
Was a bit concerned about the mixed reviews on this bottling, but couldn't pass up the opportunity at auction for $12/btl.
Acid-driven and quite tart on the pop 'n pour. Not particularly enjoyable at this point but this improved continuously as it got air. Is indeed cloudy, as mentioned in another note, but that does not bother me at all, as the wine was sound. Interesting and complex on the nose with some pine and citrus. On the second evening, this blossomed, with cherry, blood orange, and a touch of oak. Fleshy and full mouthfeel. Lots of acidity to keep it fresh tasting.
I think this has years ahead of it - it reminded me of the 1996 Hellenthal vineyard bottling that I had last year and absolutely loved. It's got the structure and enough fruit to be a 25 year Pinot easily.

  • Dried fruit and hint of stems at mid. Long finish with touch of alcohol

  • Definitely an off bottle, with a cloudy appearance indicative of the growth of yeast or bacteria. I wouldn't call this brett as in lacked the barnyard aspect I usually associate with it, but the wine definitely had an odd aroma.
The fruit was still here and based on the notes it appears some bottles avoided this spoilage problem. Alas, mine did not. Now I know why I managed to "score" this bottle recently for only $20. Note that although I consider this a flawed wine, I still drank it... just didn't feel like opening another bottle.
