Somehow I missed a vintage from a winery that always ranks high on my wine thermometer.
There I was scanning the app of my cellared wines specifically for wines I have yet to rate and review, and I see this lone selection of a slightly older vintage with no notes from yours truly. This can't be! I furiously start a search on my website for a missed review, alas, I found none. I did, in fact, miss the boat.
The wine you might ask?
Three Sticks Durell Vineyard Chardonnay 2019
I now intend to resolve that oversight.
From their organically farmed Durell Vineyard, this co-flagship wine (the Durell Pinot Noir the other), originating from the first estate property bought back in 1997, opens with bright acidity on a bedrock of ginger and honey notes along with Apple and a vein of minerality.
Back in October, I jumped the tracks (another transportation idiom) by reviewing the 2020 vintage of this same wine, missing this earlier vintage. In my defense, I did so as I was comparing the Durell Chardonnay to the Gap’s Crown Chardonnay; both excellent wines but my fav was the Gap’s Crown. Me thinks I am making excuses for my oversight, and I would be correct. (I love it when I’m right).
It's tough to keep raving about Three Sticks wines, but I have to do it! When things are this good consistently, it's hard not to. A difficult part of all of this is that many of the wines they release each year sell out quickly. While you may find their wines on store shelves, the best place to be first in line is by signing up to get notifications about upcoming releases or to join their wine club membership, you decide, but as a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir drinker, Three Sticks should be on your list.
Cheers

This was softer and more alluring versus the Gap's Crown, with pineapple, tropical fruit, asian pear and cream brûlée notes. The palate was rich and lush with succulent ripe stone fruit and tropical notes, vanilla and pastry notes rounded out the palate, long lush finish.

Outstanding Chardonnay with nice acidity and excellent flavor profile. Crystallized ginger notes, some citrus throughout. My only complaint was I let this get too chilled and did not let it warm prior to drinking. Totally my fault, not the wine’s. Powerful, yet elegant. Just excellent juice.

Oh heck yeah! We visited Three Sticks in July and had an incredible tasting at The Adobe hosted by Greg. It was a stellar experience and we decided we wanted and needed more. I opened this bottle last night and wondered if it would live up to the experience we had enjoyed in Sonoma, or had I just been swept away in the euphoria of the moment. In a nutshell- no! This wine was even more scintillating in my kitchen than in that idyllic setting. Bright and pristine with candied ginger notes and a mouthfeel that could not be more enjoyable. Perfect body and weight, almost cloud-like in nature. My wife and I looked at each other and at the bottle and relived the memories of the summer as well as the perfection of the moment.
