Popped-and-poured; drank over 8 hours. Very tight and shut down in the first 2 hours, but really opened up after 2 hours in the decant. I agree with drwine2001’s post on 4/30/2019. This leans more towards “new-world” Rioja. Reminds me more of an upper-tier, earth-forward California or Chilean cabernet; not so much a nuanced Spanish Rioja . To be sure, this is a very solid juice, just adjust your style-expectations accordingly. Better suited for a hearty steak dinner with good friends than a stand-alone / drink-alone. It gets smoother in texture the longer it is decanted; 8 hours in, and it’s still drinking marvelously. Drink now, but will probably remain at this plateau until 2022. I paid $75 US which I believe is a fair price for the quality and age.

Deep, saturated color for 25 year old Rioja. Upon uncorking, overwhelming pine aroma, but this markedly changed after decanting and a bit of air-sour cherry, smoke, and herbs. Big wine, pretty dense, cedar/pine underpinning with prodigious volume of dark red fruit, fennel, and that nice smoky nuance. Not my ideal in terms of weight (this will never be one of those really ethereal Riojas) nor gentle sweetness found in the best old examples, but this has an incredible core of fruit that has more modern appeal and should carry the wine for several more decades.

a purple wine. i mean that from the perspective of the artist formerly known as. really declicious, wood is well integrated and the nose is invigorating with floral and other notes. palate is plush but not cloying, full bodied with excellent concentration of fruit. very good and certainly will keep so for at least a decade.

Medium core, tawny edge. All volatile acidity and American oak on the nose. Big and chunky for Rioja. Tobacco and ripe fruit that is undercut and shortened by the dill notes from the combination of the wood and VA. Not very good, and strikingly clumsy when compared to the '94 Lopez de Heredia we had recently.
