  • Nice brick color, though still dark; bramble, blackberries and black pepper on the nose; wonderful silky black fruit with white pepper, well-integrated tannins. Just lovely, opens within 30 minutes, no decanting. Though I used a Venturi for good effect. Delightful to see a well-made Napa Zin stand up to 27 years of age!

  • In my cellar for the last 15 years. 14.9% ABV. Double decanted 4 hours before tasting. Way better after the time than when first opened but just an amazing wine. The nose is enthralling with so many secondary and tertiary notes ranging from prosciutto and smoked meat to leather and tobacco. This is a wine you could just smell all night. Palate is silky and deep with black stewed fruit, raisin and dried cherry, leather, tobacco, cedar as well as sweet and savory spice notes. Very complex and delicious. Richly textured. Moderately long finish.

  • Similar to earlier note, though this bottle is showing some browning and more age. The cork was soaked 1/3 up.

  • No signs of browning, opaque reddish/purple. Supple inviting nose, like a spicy fruit compote. Cranberry and cassis on the palate, with a brightness and healthy amount of structure for a 21 year old zin. Showed well from opening and throughout the night.

  • Tremendous and wonderful 20 year old Cali Zin. Soft and melancholy wine with flavors of (probably the original Zinfandel) toned down to the point that any acidity is gone and so are the hard but ever present edges of the flavors.

That said the wine is delicious and worth trying. While most of the nose on this wine is muted, as expected for a mature wine, so too is the nearly 15% alchohol and probably sharp edges it likely originally demonstrated.

Great wine with a short finish with lingering blackberry fruits.
