  • Burgundy Tasting (Restaurant Schweizer's, Stuttgart): Glass: Spiegelau Burgundy
My first disappointment of the night. IMHO the bottle was past peak. Clear, deep tawny color. Fully mature nose, certainly fine and spicy, but not with the intoxicating flavors a great Chambertin can enchant.
On the palate some interesting spicy, cinnamon like notes, fine tannin, some tobacco, high acidity, 13,5% abv. Good length. Drinks nicely, but far from being great and for me declining. 90-91

  • 13x Pinot Greatness: Tasted double blind. A luxurious wine. Superb, highly complex, round and satin-like. For an even higher score the precision and purity would haave needed to be on a higher level. Clearly at its peak today as with more time in the glass some unwanted ageing notes came forward.

TN: Very layered nose, toasty, dark red berries, smoke and herbs. Every sniff with a new aroma. On the palate this is fresh and light but with the typical mid palate weight and satin-like texture. Layered with red and blue fruit, herbs, smoke, toast, cola, minerality. New nuances popping up everywhere from the attack to the long finish. Quite complete.

Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting necessary.

  • During a Pinot blind tasting dinner. Light garnet with amber rim. Glorious Burg nose with farmyard, autumn leaves, strawberry cake. Excellent sucrosité on the palate. Fully mature, drink up. Together iwth the Cornu Corton 2010 my favorite wine of the night and also #3 WOTN for the group.

  • Lots of black fruit, moderately mature. Very good concentration. Good length. Slightly more pronounced new oak than I would prefer at this stage in its development. Hard to say if this will get better, vs most 1996 Grand Crus which tend to clearly have upside.

  • Chambertin Clos de Beze Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind. Really great spice on the nose, albeit some from the oak. Red and black cherry flavors, also complemented nicely with spice. Acidity and mineraility help provide great textures, lots of nuance. Somewhat subtle for a mid-aged Beze from a good vintage. This was the North Berkeley "Cuvee Unique" bottling. Opened 3 hours before serving, decanted 45 minutes before serving.
