I almost never write more than one note on the same wine, but having opened another bottle, I have to say that this is…not very good. The 2020 pigeur fou, by contrast, is perfectly pleasant.

I’ve been enthusiastically consuming this wine for three or four vintages. It’s always seemed impressively floral and finessed for a village-level daily drinker. The 2020, however, not so much. It frankly comes off as a bit rustic and lacking in depth, more like old-school Loire vin de table. Maybe it’s just me, but I wonder if they changed the source fruit that was used.

Last night we enjoyed the 2018 vintage and tonight tried 2020 alongside what remaind of the 2018. The 2020 appeared to have less body and tannin and be more acidic so I preferred the 2018. I still have some 2017 and 2019 left so maybe I will compare more. Both years (18 and 20) are distinctly Loire Cab Franc which takes on a familiar taste. I have found Cab Francs from other areas do not have this specific feature. This being the first area of France where I actually drank the wine where it was grown it has a special place for me even if this first occurred over 40 years ago!

Fabulous Loire Cab Franc and an excellent value. I hope that Garagiste continues to offer this wine. This is right in my wheelhouse. Fragrant and textured Cabernet Franc. Maybe my favorite vintage yet from Cotelleraie.

It's either this bottle or this vintage, not as good, showing sour and austere. $19G
