  • The Spinelli Mataro is a blend of 79% Mataro, 9% Petite Sirah, 7% Black Malvoisie, 3% Carignane, and 2% Alicante Bouschet. In the glass, the wine has an inky, saturated, dark crimson color, almost jet black in the center. The nose erupts with a cornucopia of crushed blackberries, black currants, and cooling sweet herbes de Provence, with violets, black peppercorns, and crisp toffee emerging as the wine evolves in the glass. On the palate, the wine is massively concentrated, at the same time supple, juicy, and light on its feet, like a Xavier Vignon Vacqueyras, with ripe black fruit flavors that echo the nose, sometimes suggesting smoky, dark-chocolate-covered black cherries seasoned with baking spices, cardamom, and licorice. The Petite Sirah adds structure, color, and blue-fruit character, while the Black Malvoisie adds softness and a perfumed raspberry aroma. As smooth and as succulent, and as graceful, lissome, and refreshing as such a full-bodied red wine can be. Drink now–2030

This wine has worked well with roasted game birds, lamb roasts, grilled lamb, and rack of lamb. It's a big wine that pairs well with "big" dishes.
