Other reviewers might applaud the “farmy” taste or say the aroma is reminiscent of a barnyard. I say it smells and tastes like manure. This wine makes Two Buck Chuck look good. But this is not the cheap plonk of Rumpole’s Chateau Thames Embakement. I paid $40 a bottle in a 3-bottle purchase for this wine, and have waited until the third bottle to write this scathing review. From the first bottle opened in 2022, to the second bottle opened in 2023, to the current bottle in May 2024, this wine has been consistently bad. I labored through the first two bottles, hoping against hope that the wine would improve over two or three days. But enough of that, I poured this bottle down the drain. Time to move on.

As before. Tasted next to a younger Santa Rita Hills pinot, this was the meatier, burlier, heftier wine. Also, after tasting a few redder Châteauneuf-du-Pape late last year, this draws a lot of similarities in terms of complexity, weight and just flavor. One of my favorite vintages of Vespidae to drink relatively young... we're still burying our 18s for another 4-5 years minimum. YUM.

Red fruit up front, moving directly into a complex core with mid-tone notes, earth and spice, some pepper, finishes long on both acid and tannin. Not nearly the beast that the 2018 was, this has more finesse while also having nice heft. Good with a lamb stew, fantastic next to a mixed salami plate.

A little farmy, but in a good way. Biting acidity and dried fruit. Paired perfectly with pan fried steelhead.
