Medium ruby red in appearance. Perfumed nose with bergamont and provenance herbs. Balanced with medium acidity (6/10) and a medium plus body. Black plums on the palate with some boysenberry and earl gray tea. Long finish. Drink till 2031.

Melville Spring 2022 Pickup Tasting (Melville Santa Barbara Tasting Room): Open aromatics, much like the estate Pinot. Less structure than the Block M, though still more depth than the estate. Strawberries, sage, black tea, a bit of a salty ocean quality. Long finish, though has a hint of vanillin, which is not likely due to oak, given the neutral aging g program. Still feeling like this needs 2 to 4 years to really show.
Note this is from sandy terroir at a lower elevation, presumably closer to the river basin.

Tasted at SB tasting room. Very primary, which is unsurprising given this is 1 year from harvest. Almost gives a carbonic Gamay like impression. But there is a lot of concentration of cran-raspberry fruit, sage, and tannic structure.
Hold for several years. Not sure if this currently justifies the price difference compared to their older small lots--but time will tell.

After two hours in the decanter...
Nose is clean and sound. Needs a bit of coaxing to open. Dusty cherry, cranberry, orange zest, black tea, spicy herbal frame. Outstanding.
Palate curls the corners of my lips up a bit. Really lovely. Confirming nose and a beautiful expression of Sta Rita.
Grand Cru. No rush. 93 today and probably better later.
