  • The La Rochelle site in Moulin-à-Vent covers 19 hectares, of which the Chastels own 2.3 hectares. The site is located just west of the village center on deep weathered granite. The Gamay noir à jus blanc, as it is fully named, is about 50 years old and yields between 25 and 35 hl/ha. After hand harvesting and sorting, whole bunches were used. Undamaged berries were placed at the bottom of the concrete cuve, crushed ones on top, allowing the Gamay to undergo macération semi-carbonique for about 15 days. The wine was then aged in used wood for one year.

    Medium dense garnet red

In contrast to the Champ de Cour, the 2018 La Rochelle appears more discreet and is a bit more acidic. More fresh red fruits show on the nose here. Cherries can be found, a few barberries and raspberries as well as blackberries fresh from the bush. There are also hints of tar and stone, as well as sensual notes of cinnamon and vanilla.

On the palate, the wine shines with exceedingly juicy fruit of blackberries and cherries, infused with a distinctly lively and fresh acidity, some smoked meat and smoke, some wood and earth. Moulin-à-Vent strikes a good balance between power and freshness, offering energy and a present, silky tannin.
