  • The color is between a cranberry and brick shading. Whoa, definite brett here! Despite the “garrigue” it still shows some pretty raspberry, Virginia pine resin and a touch of sandalwood. Much the same on the palate with the brett trouncing the finish. The mouthfeel is lighter than most other Virginia Cab. Francs and the mid-plate and finish are far too short. Very linear wine. No sediment. 12.5% alc. With Valdeon blue and truffled Italian and Pavie cheeses and crusty bread. Recommended with reservations.

Monday, October 06, 2003 Today I received an unlabeled bottle with a note that it is a Cab. Franc with fruit from NoVa, but made by another winery that lost its fruit in the late frost of last year. It didn’t occur to me when I read the note. It didn’t occur to me when I opened the bottle. It didn’t occur to me when I poured the wine. But it did occur to me when I tasted the wine. I strongly suspected the fruit was from another winery I like in NoVa. So I pulled the bottle of THAT Cab. Franc. Damn similar; with the edge going to Willowcroft: Very bright ruby red. This wine shows its youth. Tight nose bearing little more than red fruit and some cedar. Red fruit, raspberry and sandalwood. Also, herbal, green bell pepper and surprisingly tannic, yet medium leaning light in body. The tannins will carry this for some time. Very Chinon, but a lesser Chinon. I suspect it will improve for the next 5 years. 12.5% alc. With Chicken Provencale over pasta.
Friday, February 27, 2004 Very bright yet deep purple, showing its youth. Primary notes of smoke, spice, sandalwood and raspberry on both the nose and palate. Good strong tannins and balanced acidity that will carry this wine for a few years, I suspect. Medium bodied. Not as much depth in this wine as the ‘98 had and for that reason, somewhat disappointing. The winemaker intentionally makes it lighter now, saying judges score it higher when he makes it lighter. So much for the Parkerization of wines. Ok length on the finish with the fruit carrying all the way through. 12% alc. A simple wine for a simple meal. With bread, cheeses and leftover flank steak. (The dog snagged the balance of the flank steak from cutting board after I left the room. That’s one way to get rid of leftovers!)
Thursday, October 28, 2004 Clear ruby color with a somewhat thin look to it. Not much on the nose other than sandalwood and vegetal, green bell pepper notes. This wine is shutting down and should not be touched until this time 2005. Actually, not very enjoyable just now. 12% alc. With sausage meatballs in tomato sauce.
Thursday, June 02, 2005 Light ruby and cranberry in color. The pine resin is the first scent out of the block and dominates the nose. Other notes of raspberry and spice with loads of sandalwood. The sandalwood is deep and pleasant. The bouquet rounds out with some smokiness and some vegetalness. SAN - almost an exact duplicate, but the pine resin is not as pronounced - thank goodness. This has developed an overly acidic quality. Medium bodied. Has plumped up since the last time I had it. Nose and palate improve and deep with some time. This probably needs to be decanted. Should not be opened again until ‘08. 12.5% alc. With flank steak (beef).
