  • What a surprise!

I went to a party at a friends house. Over the years he has managed to collect some nice wines even though he doesn’t drink wine on a regular basis. Unfortunately he didn’t store them in ideal conditions but acceptable. In a closet or his basement that is air conditioned.

We were making pizzas and steaks so I figured I’d grab a bottle of something Italian. I saw this one and figured might as well open it. It’s either good and we can enjoy it or it’s taking up space When I tried opening it the cork split. There was staining almost all the way up the cork but there was about 1/4” of unstained cork at the top. I figured the bottle was a goner. I managed to get the cork out.

Wow. As soon as I did the aroma that came out of the bottle made me excited.

Cherries and herbs and menthol. Some vanilla and wood.

The color was a bit brickish as you would expect. Some sediment and bits of cork floating in there. (I know I was careless opening and pouring but we didn’t have a decanter and we were in a festive mood)

The taste had good acidity and some tannins. Berries and herbs. And some nice age and wooziness with dusty mouthfeel.

So surprising given my low low low expectations. Paired awesome with the pizzas.

  • I can back up ESFESQ's notes, mine are very similar. A very nice surprise, still dense, pretty powerful. And the tannin is still there, I really think this has some years left. I wonder how this tasted in the beginning.
Great Chianti, modern in style but very delicious. So much cherries and these Mediterranean herbs... enjoy!

  • Very surprising how much vigor this wine still has left! It shows a medium to dark ruby color with slight lightening on the edges, but it immediately had beautiful violet aromas, red berry (cherry?) fruit with some a wood, damp earth, a high note (camphor?), and zesty herbs. It showed broad and wide on the palate, so much heavier than one would expect in a 14 year old Chianti. It held together well through the finish with much more tannic grip than I expected and impressive length & persistence. This was just a straight up solid wine. Opened up more and more over the course of our meal -- a very pleasant surprise.

  • A confident and impressively youthful medium ruby colour. A lovely nose of subtle herbs, old wood and cassis immediately suggests very ripe material, The wood gives way to a more powerful herbal note, with cigarette stub and raspberry too. After two hours, the nose becomes malty and chocolatey. Full body. As the colour implied, the broad and dense palate is youthful. The sweetness initially seems convincing. The small amount of cabernet sauvignon that is used here definitely translates into the cassis which stands out a bit too much, for the wine to represent a classical version of the genre. There is a liqueur-like aspect to the wine and, after a good while, it seems just a bit too sweet. Later, as the bottle neared the end, the wine had a flavour akin to apple-cider. Yet, at all times, the fruit was in control. Complex, layered and fine. No need to rush this.
