Opened with notes of cherry, raspberry, and blackberry transitioning to notes of vanilla, black pepper, and herbs. Still a lot of tannins on this, and the oak influence is more prominent than in some of the other Sandlands wines. Just seemed slightly disjointed. Based on the tannins and oak influence, I probably opened this way too soon. Probably better in 5 years. 13.8% ABV.

Popped and poured; consumed over two days. No formal notes. The 2020 Mataro pours a deep garnet/purple with a nearly opaque core and some staining of the tears. Predominately dark fruited with some pepper, and minerals. The wine is dry with very good structure. Tart and so fresh at this stage! I’m going to give my remaining bottles a bit more time.

A very nice, full bodied wine from Sandlands. Light purple color, medium legs, no sediment in the bottle. Aromas of dark fruit, hints of smoke and black pepper. Acid and tannin are both high. The tannins are a little harsh on the finish, but should soften in a few years. the finish is medium to medium-long. There is a lot of dark fruit flavor, but also smoke, pepper, and earthy notes. Paired well with pulled pork barbecue. I wish I had put it in the cellar for a few years, it should improve with time. It it definitely has the structure to age well for many years.
