  • Drank with wine group at Asti. Stunning and WOTN against some major players. Decanted for a couple hours ahead of time. Perfumes of roses, bright red cherries and licorice just seemed to pour from the glass. Much the same driving. Amazing and classic. Perfect balance. Can still hold other bottles.

  • Dark crimson darkest of the three Barolos tonight). This is tight and wound up at first. It really needed time and never fully opened up I suspected. That said, this is a phenomenal wine, still rather primary and showing hints of what it will be with more age. Concentrated and deep, with layers of tar, oak spice, leather, cherries. Structurally, the acid is very lifted and the tannins are quite evident, gripping the palate. That said, there is a luxurious sense t this wine and it is poised to be a blockbuster of a Barolo.

  • This was very interesting in that it started out as smelling very "metalic" and was quite dried out on the palate, but progressively got more perfumed and slightly rounder with about 40 minutes of air. Granted, it was popped and poured so was pretty closed down at first but the contrast was pretty striking. It developed black berry, cola, bitter root, blood-iron. Fantastic with the concentrated guanciale red sauce pasta at Hippo. Compared to the Marcarina '98 La Serra, this was much more structured, better spine, grippier tannins, and more perfumed and complex. 2 days later drank the last 1/4 of the bottle and it was sailing. Usually an older wine like this dies after a day or 2 after exposure.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): I must confess that I think others at the table liked the Rinaldi lineup more than I did (though they were obviously very excellent wines in their own right). This was one of my favourites of the flight, alongside the 2001 Brunate. Darkly complexioned, with a moderate amount of secondary complexity, more leathery and earthy, with some very stern and serious tannins. Large-scaled and somewhat monolithic, but very impressive in its stature.

  • Drinking deliciously -- lifted, intense aromas of cherry, old leather and spice. The palate is chockfull of concentrated, classic fruit with impeccable balance and elegance. 20+ years of life ahead but this is fun and ready now.

    (G. RINALDI Barolo Brunate Le Coste) 2007 and Rinaldi Dear Friends, I served both of these last night and they represent what is so exciting about the 2007 vintage for European white wine in the $10-15 level. Both would make for a lovely diner ensemble if fresh fish or shellfish is involved. They also drink quite well on their own. This is a set of 2007's with high aspirations but absolutely no pretense - both are HIGHLY RECOMMEDED for their genre (but I don't have much, which is the downside). ...also, based on the 1998 Barolo review from the WA yesterday (on the web site), I received numerous requests for the Altare Brunate but I'll have to look around for a parcel - I did secure a few magnums of 1998 G. Rinaldi Brunate/Le Coste from their library instead... 2007 Mikael Bouges "La Pente de Chavigny" Sauvignon (Touraine) LIMITED 6/person A perfect start to an evening, Bouges does it again with this Sancerre alternative that shimmers with the fossil rich soil of his old-vine vineyard in Faverolles. This is Sauvignon Blanc with verve, complexity, citric minerality and lovely tone that shows-off the cleansing style of this Loire hamlet. 12.5% alcohol that satisfies the everyday and beyond. A steal. 2007 Amarre Verdejo (Bodegas Vidal Rueda) LIMITED 6/person (this not the Cepas Viejas) This wine is revered in Spain and I can understand why. Verdejo is often overlooked by wine consumers in the US but that may change with a new generation of young vintners bent on showing the world they can compete with Anjou, Saumur and Muscadet. This organically produced Verdejo expresses the green-tinged intensity of this grape, grown in the hotbed of Valladolid (literally hot, but not in 2007 which is why the vintage is so special). From very old vines, nothing was added or taken away from this tank aged wine that has pent up energy and power but the terroir, delicacy and tone many of us look for in the Loire. The only reason this is less than $20 is because it's from Spain and the US hasn't quite figured out that Spain produces white wine of vibrant character as well as red. Listed at 12.5% alcohol and it may actually be less, only 12.1%. A serious wine of freshness and educational value (not to mention a perfect pair with oysters or crab). ...and, as a special treat, this magnum is directly from the winery cellar as part of their library - it represents the old-school process of bottling the finest "reserve" level wine in magnum. My guess is that it will last for a long time. VERY RARE in this format - only a few dozen were released from the winery overt the last five years: 1998 G. Rinaldi Barolo "Brunate/Le Coste" 1.5lt (AG91) (this is far more expensive than two 750ml's but it should prove to be superior to the material in the 750's as well) Both of the 2007 whites have arrived, the Barolo will be here in a few weeks. All will ship during the spring shipping season. Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Loire3211 Spain6521 Italy4278

    (G. Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste) Barolo Vertical Dear Friends, After the 2001 G. Rinaldi offer earlier in the week, many of the replies asked for older wine from this producer - how about a 12 vintage vertical directly from the source? An offer like this makes all the solitary days of running around on your behalf worth it - Barolo is one of the most difficult wines to acquire in a vertical series as most producers hold little of their production back due to the high cost of keeping stock (rather, by selling it right away the high intake of cash is more of an allure). With most producers, you can easily piece together a vertical from a multitude of sources but original cellar stock? That's rare. I would consider this one of our first really major offers of the season because it took the most cajoling (and effort) to make it happen. I know this isn't a price-point most of us trade in but it's very special to me nonetheless. I'm also sure you can find this cheaper on an individual bottle basis (if you purchase the bottles one at time from the cheapest source) but the conditions will all be different and the real intent of this is to open the entire lot on the same night at a Barolo event or to take possession with known provenance/history and then open them one-by-one over the course of a few months (to get an ideal vintage comparison in a relatively short period of time) - I think you will be very surprised at the results. Maybe it's a bit clinical of me to think the provenance is that important but this vertical insures the same history on each wine and the same conditions for all 12 bottles (albeit, of different ages) - that is a rarity in our industry and even rarer with Barolo - it is the main reason why I jumped at the chance to showcase the relatively unheralded glory of this producer that should (in time) be looked at in the same league as Giacomo Conterno, Giacosa and Mascarello (who is Rinaldi's cousin). In a blind tasting, I have no doubt that a number of wines below would equal or surpass that of the preceding three great names: This vertical contains one case of wine (12 bottles) - all original cellar stock. Don't poo-poo the 1994, Beppe Rinaldi now considers it to be a bigger success than the 1995 (that's why you don't see the 1995) and he insisted on including it to show that great terroir can win out over vintage (there's almost no 1994 available at the winery and quite a bit of 1995 so it's not like he's trying to dump the 1994). You can look up reviews on this set if you need to (Tanzer has especially gifted things to say about the 2004s) but I feel strongly that this collection should be enjoyed without the pressure to live up to reviews - sometimes it's better to just let the wine do the talking: G. (Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo "Brunate-Le Coste") I have had better bottles of this. Tar, roses and a touch of alchohol on the nose. Beautifully elegant on the palate but the fruit was not like I remember. Maybe closed. Still had dazzling purity and balance.

(Giuessepe Rinaldi Barolo "Brunate-Le Coste") What a nose! Mint, cinnamon, mushrooms, strawberry, leather, roses. Very well-crafted with stunning balance and incredible powdery tannins. Lasting cherry and strawberry fruit and a long finish that pumps out fruit.
