  • Make Mine Orange

So much has been said about “Orange” wines in recent months, heck (trying to keep it clean), even I have done a post or 2 about the phenomenon of orange wines. Surprisingly, this is no phenomenon. Orange wines have been around for a long time! Just that no one talked about them.

It is no clearer than with that auspicious grape “Pinot Grigio.” It might even be postulated that Pinot Grigio is the forbearer of this wave, and today’s wine falls right smack dab into the middle of this trend.

Venica & Venica Jesera Pinot Grigio 2021

Not such a mystery though. Leaving the must to ferment on the lees for 6 months (a portion in wood barrels and some in stainless steel), helps to produce this “orange” glow. After all, Pinot Grigio grapes are an odd pinkish-grey color that lends itself to the resulting color.

On the palate, softer citrus notes with a faint red fruit flavor entice. The acidity is good but it comes across as slightly softer with an edge toward creaminess.

This is my second encounter with this wine as back in my days working at a wine shop, I became enamored with this wine and to this day has not failed to impress. So don’t let color dissuade you, this is a great wine for so many occasions. If you see it, buy it. “Make Yours Orange” as well.

    Cheers

  • Not your usual Pinot Grigio. It is pale copper colored and relatively viscous. The palate offers a touch of apple, stone fruit, spice and citric crispness on the finish. Smooth and juicy.

  • i never thought i would give a Pinot Grigio 92 pts but this is an outstanding wine, slightly orangish in color and full of brightness and energy, with good acidity and a bouquet that jumps out of the glass with nuances of apples and white flowers. Love it!

  • Big body wine (13.5%). Tasted almost like a chardonnay. Good finish.
