  • 2008 Champagne - 25 top names tasted blind: During a blind tasting dinner. A generous friend brought this special wodden box with him containing 1x 2008 GS normal aged in the Domaine's cellar and 1x 2008 aged under water on the sea bed in Brittany, off the French coast. We were not given any information and were asked to assess the wines as they show. Interesting result. My tasting notes read as follows:
Normal 2008 GS: Beautiful nose of bruised apples, spices, more Pinot led, good aromatic persistence, showing some age, guessing 15y of age. (95pt)
Submarine 2008 GS: More citrus led, feels younger with less evolved Pinot aromas. Extremely precise palate, fresh, the bubbles are noticeably different here, much finer. Very elegant. (96pt)
What a surprise when we saw that these were the same wines with a different aging regime. Both great, but they were indeed quite different.
