Medium to dark purple. Heady aromas of cherry liqueur, wild berry preserves, olive tapenade and suggestions of thyme and oregano. Complex and layered; intense but not heavy. The palate calls to mind kirsch-soaked Black Forest cake. Medium+ acidity and tannins are fully resolved. The finish is an epitome of endurance. Wonderful online auction find.

Nice right now, but piggybacking on the immediately prior note, the heat is still there. Prime example of the Turley style. Not my favorite, but enjoyable for what it is. Deep, dark, just-ripened fruit; tannic backbone (even at almost 10 years); and heat (15.3% per the bottle, and it wouldn't surprise me if it were pushing the upper end of the permissible range).

This is definitely ready to go. I can't see this improving much over the next 2-3 years, unless some of the heat subsides. I drank this over 2 days. The "heat" was overly evident on day 1, almost masking the fine fruit. I have never quite understood Martinelli's penchant for doing this...great dark fruit, some earthiness, and tannins, but burying it under a layer of heat. On day 2, some of that heat had burned off and much more of what CAN make Martinelli wines great was finally able to shine through. I have one bottle left and will be giving it as a gift to someone who appreciates this more than do I.

Very good wine. Do not see how it can get better.....but not tiring. Those who have it should drink. Deep and dark purple. Fruity, but not overly so as can be the case with some syrahs. A sophisticated style.
