NICE Martinelli Syrah. Pretty much forgot I had this wine. Poured dark maroon to the glass. Grilled meat nose with a touch of blackberry sweetness and a touch of fig. The entry was mostly sweet fruit with pencil shavings, transitioning to savory rather quickly. Savory notes through the middle and finish. Bacon fat with grilled ribeye steak to the finish. Strikes a very delicate balance between those that like sweeter and more savory Syrah. Nice job, Martinelli!

Not a fan of the overextracted syrahs, and this one is not one of those. This syrah is much more well balanced and almost had a Hermitage style. This one poured a violet color and was served PNP. Not sure if this one really required much decanting given that it was a 2012. But 2 hours after it was originally open we wish that we would have decanted it! This wine started out with a good rubust front. Initially the nose was oatmeal raisin cookie with a hint of dark herbal perfumes and oils (lavender). The entry of the wine had a nice blackberry and plum. As it opened up, the plum really took off. The middle of the wine got more herbaceous as it opened up. Green pepper (not too much of it) integrated nicely with the black fruit front and fig/tobacco/pepper finish. The pepper initially on the finish was not very noticeable, but as the wine opened up it really did develop nicely. Glad I have another one, as I'd probably do things a little differently. I don't think this one has a HUGE amount of life left, but it will certainly hold its own through 2019/2020.
