  • Gorgeous perfumed nose of Negroni and rose petals. Spicy red fruit. Very pretty, delicate. Long finish, straightforward. Drinking now, will improve over the next 5 years.

  • Very pretty and classically Chanin nose with mineral accented red cherry and red berries, a touch of raspberry and a mix of earth, light oak, floral notes and minerals. Between light and medium bodied (12.5% ABV) with a fruit profile showcasing red cherry, red berries and bright red raspberry. Comes off as a slightly delicate wine at first, but then with more support and density. There's very good depth through the middle as well as a silky elegance throughout. Tannins, acidity and tart red cherry on the back provide support with minerals and earth through the finish. But what sets this wine apart is its integration and balance; balance between fruit and structure and integration between mid-body and finish. Drinking quite well at present, especially with two hours open. Should continue to improve over the next few years where I'd expect a little more depth and a touch more complexity as it continues to really come together. Next bottle for me perhaps as soon as Q4 2024.

  • Gavin Chanin has been a favorite producer since I first visited Santa Barbara back in 2015. The wines are honest, balanced, and full of character in general. The 2020 Los Alamos Pinot Noir clocks in at a very modest 12.5% ABV, and has an explosive nose of rhubarb, poached cherries, oolong tea, dried orange peel, rose petals and potting soil. A fresh, yet concentrated approach, the texture is silky and invigorating. The acidity is poised and fresh without being the least bit sharp, and it carries the cascade of flavors beautifully through the lengthy finish. A lovely wine. Classic. Worth seeking out.

  • Gavin Chanin Masterclass (Stannary Wine Company, London SE11): Red cherry on the nose, medium bodied with silky tannins and more cherry fruit on the midpalate and a bit of spice. Good overall balance although one wonders if there is a bit of lingering heat. From Zalto Burgundy.
