The bottle looked to be in pristine condition, and it came in the original card box in the same state. Pressure under the cork, a sigh on opening, and it's fully fizzy in the glass. Rich old gold colour, the darkest white champagne I've seen in a while. Mild, creamy aroma, a little apple, plentiful baked pastry: unmistakeably mature, but still alive. The flavour profile is more distinctive, and quite delicious. A touch savoury, very good acidity, lots of juicy apple, a hint of pear. With air, a coffee-butterscotch sweetness builds. Great intensity. My first '85. Great value. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Vintage Wine & Port, £145].

Color of pure honey. Initial musty aromas gave way to a round, full nose of butterscotch, nutmeg, and apricot, with a slight note of lemon juice. This corresponded to a surprising acidity on the palate, though the effervescence has largely dissipated, leaving this rich and smooth like mature Sauternes. I had been concerned that this might be over the hill but my fears were misplaced; this is drinking perfectly at the moment. Brilliant vintage Champies.

Oh, so fresh, characteristic non-malo Gosset style. Sharp, fresh and autolytic. Classy as an old school British gentleman.
