Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • I have vivid memories of a de Bartoli Grappoli de Grillo that I drank many years ago in Italy, and so when I saw this in a local store (Formaggio Kitchen, in the South End, Boston), I snatched it up, despite the $50 price tag. In that context, this wine is indubitably disappointing, starting with the initial aromas of grass, orange peel, and burnt hair, and continuing with the high acidity and high VA. After the bottle had been open for a while, some more pleasant elderflower flavors emerged, and the wine was much better on day 3, when the VA had mellowed and the wine had gained weight and tasted more of dry cider. The wine also tasted better out of a burgundy glass than out of a straight-sided chardonnay glass. So my guess is that it will improve with more time in the bottle, but I can still think of many better ways of spending $50.
