  • This sparkling Shiraz is very rustic and reminds me of a VineCrest Sparkling Shiraz from the Barossa (2006). Deep and dark in colour, with fine bubbles, it is one of the very best in this class. There is hay, rust, old leather and dry clay soil. Nice medium weight and fair length, it sits well on the tongue. Looked forward to subsequent pours during the tasting night.

  • 2016 Ashton Hills Sparkling Shiraz (ex Wendouree), Clare, SA

    NB42 TASTING

Black on pour. Deep robe. Medium body with a very fine bead. Not at all sweet, this is all about perfectly ripe Shiraz fruit, pepper spice, and the red earth and iron of Clare Shiraz. Better just below room temp, colder it lost some detail. Very good, but young. Needs some more time for the leather notes to emerge that make this wine such a unique and unusual view of Australian wine.

Look again in 7 years, this is still a pup.
