Quite grapey on the nose. It reminds me a lot of PYCM’s pinot rosé, oddly. Fresh and direct on the palate, clean red-fruited profile, subtle fine mousse. Some attractive saltiness. Very pleasant & refreshing, if not the most complex of wines.

Knights of Alba (KOA) Candidate Dinner (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Last week we had this wine right on the heels of a few champagnes (specifically a Bouchard that was just rocking) and it didn’t really hold up. However when it’s the starting wine in the line-up it’s great. Very appealing - lots of red fruits and a nice acidity and just gets things going. Don’t see a lot of sparkling Nebbiolo but this was well done (as you might expect given I think it was reintroduced into production by Roberto Conterno when he took over Nervi).

On the heels of the champagne. I have often said that there is clearly a difference between champagne and other sparkling wines and while I think this one is a very well made sparkling wine it’s not at the same level as a Bouchard for example.

Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): A real treat to get to try (and only happened because an earlier visit included a producer who needed to have the wine - the bottle was not opened just for us :-)). Brut in style. Just 3% RS. Very acidic. Crisp. A touch drying. Fresh and yet with a hint of elegance. Some good fruit to it. It’s surprising to me that the Nebbiolo sparkling doesn’t get more focus. The few we’ve had on this trip have been some of the best sparkling we’ve had from Italy.
