Fascinating tasting tonight… ‘21 Staglin Estate vs ‘21 Pride Vintners Reserve Chardonnay. Both estate grown and both grown in locations where the Chardonnay grape shouldn’t perform at its best due to the climate and heat. One on the Valley floor in Rutherford and the other at the top of Spring Mtn. Long story short, the Staglin smoked the Pride. Why? The Staglin was perfectly in balance and has an elegance that could stand up against Grand Cru Burg. This will get better with time in bottle. The Pride VR while good, had a dominant sour green apple note, more toasted oak, and a petrol, oily finish that is uncharacteristic of Chardonnay. All that said, I’m not sure the Staglin is worth 4x the cost of the Pride VR. Nevertheless, an interesting side by side tasting.
