  • Dinner at Giant Garoupa (Giant Garoupa Restaurant): This was another bottle that was a bit of a let-down given the pedigree of the terroir, the vintage and how well it performed a few years back. I must say thta it had a beautiful nose when poured, with masculine notes of roast meat, wet stone and sous bois undergirding fragrant red cherries and berries, little smoky, spicy nuances and a touch of musky flowers in the background. The palate was not quite up to scratch though. Rather big and extracted, this had firm Corton tannins ringed around dark cherry and cassis flavours, with some smoky spice and a bit of earthy mineral on the midpalate. There was good depth and good freshness, but it felt a bit modern in its big, almost Rhone-ish fruit flavours. Nothing wrong with that though. It was the finish that threw the wine off a little by being rather too drying, with vine stemmy notes and a touch of rustic tannins. Not a bad wine, but not a Grand Cru experience. I am not sure this will improve much beyond this point.

  • Good Burgundian nose of mushy earthy strawberries and garrigue spice. Good dark spiced black cherries and dark berries but with aged Rhone like nuances and garrigue. Has rich fruit and a plump body with alc structure. A bit imbalances by it's alc.

  • Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Singapore Chapitre de l'Orchidee -10th Anniversaire dinner (The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore): Head and shoulders above the Clos du Roi. This was rather nice indeed. Tight nose, as would be expected, with just a handful of earth and bits of flintiness. Tight palate too, took a bit of time to open up, but when it did, it showed nice red fruits - cherries and ripe cranberries - certainly more stuffing here than the Clos du Roi. Slightly powdery tannins gave the wine a velvety grip, with some acidity providing a good, but unobtrusive balance. Quite a bit of sappiness, moving into a finish of some lengthm which showed orangey notes along with a dose of spice. Very enjoyable.

  • Lightish cherries and hawthorne berries backed by light dusty earth.

  • Wine drinks well after 15 minutes and only gets better. This wine is elegant, very bright and fruit forward and almost Chambertin like in nature.
