  • Rustic and untamed with loads of black fruit, a mix of fresh with mostly stewed. Tannin still holding strong but an hour of decanting allowed this wine to open beautifully. Still rough, like chewing on the entire grape cluster. Quite enjoyable.

  • Deep purple color, big fruit balanced well with the tannins. Drinking really well. This needed a few years and has turned our to be a good one.

  • This wine, of which only nine barrels were produced, was kindly provided by Ken Johnson. It was tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. The robe is literally opaque black. The nose is fairly closed, but does yield some aromas of blackberries, vanilla and underbrush, with a noticeable "stemmy" component. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, massive ripe tannins, significant oak and hot alcohol (which is listed as 14.8%). The flavor profile, if one can get beyond the oak, is black fruit-dominated. The middle palate is solid and leads to a medium-length, hot finish. I suspect that time in the bottle may soften some (but not all) of the rough edges on this one. For any owner of this wine, it is imperative that it be served at the appropriate temperature (approximately 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit). It is certainly not my style, no matter what the serving temperature. Drink 1/16-12/30.
