  • Quite muted over all. Paired well with food due to the noticeable acids, but other wise underwhelmed.

  • Popped another bottle with some barbecue, and can't say I was particularly enamored with it. The wine was clearly Syrah and clearly Cornas. It played well enough with meat and smoke, but it didn't at any point sing. Hoping the bottle was off, as this was disappointing compared to previous specimens.

  • Rich and smoky. Too young. Much too young, but I couldn't resist, officer. The shop had an extra bottle from a split order, and there was no room on the rack for it to join the OWC. Decanted an hour, still really vicious. Four hours in it's starting to relax a bit, but this has tannins that just overwhelm the finish (which is pretty long and magic, just the same) at this stage. Anyhow, slightly cloudy ruby (sediment is very fine, the bottle is going to have to rest upright for a couple days; taking it in the car before drinking didn't help things), extremely deep color. So much going on in the nose it's hard to really say much intelligent about it; I could smell this all day. Spice? Rose? Tart cherry? Dried fruit? So so much going on, but oh so wonderful to smell. Definitely some smoke. I want to eat this with dried sausages and crusty bread. All day long. Oh.

On the palate there's a controlled fruit flavor up front; not as much acid as I might like, it tends a little in the sweet side, but isn't flabby. Full bodied, mouth-coating, high on the flavor intensity, but the aforementioned tannins take over and suck it away after a few seconds. Finish is pretty epic.

Note to self: Forget I have these bottles for another 5 years and return to the OWC.

  • Defintely a "modern" Cornas, though to say it is a modern wine in style is not accurate. Dried cherries and dark fruits, bright acidity, and dry chalky tannins. The new oak influence comes out after decanting. This was infanticide so there is a lot of potential. Not like my favorites Clape or Voge but a solid wine with serious potential. I won't try again for a couple of years.

  • Unimpressive....tart but lacking concentration or real character. Barely discernable as a N. Rhone, but out of balance with too much acidity and tannin and comparatively lacking in fruit and stuffing.
