The warmth bouquet has lots of black plums, baking spices, eucalyptus and some meaty undertones. The nose is surprisingly not big and forward, it has some degree of ‘quiet confidence’ and aromatic depth. It reminds me of a meal than a drink. The palate opens with elegant but persistent notes of ripe fruits, salty minerals, peppery spices and grilled beef, seamlessly transits to an intense and layered mid-palate, and then a slowly decaying finish full of cocoa and spiced fruits, showing the complex profile of the wine. The structure is so dense and deep. The only complain I have is the lifted acidity, which is a touch hard at the end of the palate, creates a dent in the smooth texture and experience. Some may find this vintage not as open and not as seamless in the palate compared to others. But if you like your Shiraz to be a bit more low key and mysterious, this could be perfect for you. It is ready to drink now with minimal decanting and it will last for at least another decade.
Retasted in May 2022 from an Imperial bottle. A touch more vanilla and white pepper on the nose. The floral note and ripe blue fruits persist from entry to finish. Rich and fresh with smooth texture. No change in score.
