Community Tasting Notes (11) Avg Score: 92.9 points

  • Glossy and dark with concentrated fruit, notes of blackberry preserve, spices, tobacco, smoke on the expressive nose. On the palate dense and a little heavy, very powerful and a little hot and one-dimensional. Very long. 89-91

  • Need time in the decanter to burn the sweetness off. Not for the faint hearted

  • Matured bouquet of overripe cherry tomato and blueberries compote, sweet spices and floral notes, old leather, eucalyptus and dusty cocoa. The nose is not forceful, in fact there are some degree of elegance with just the right concentration, depth and complexity to keep people’s interest. The fruit forward aroma tells everyone that it is a new world wine. The nose does not prepared you for the palate. It is dense and penetrating with loads of minerals. It bites you gradually as you chew on it. The mid-palate is big, energetic, spicy and fruity. It is not a fruit bomb though. This needs at least an hour in the decanter for the elements to settle down, if you have two hours, it is even better. Compared to the other younger vintages like 2007, 2008 and 2009, this 2004 has the most complex nose and biggest and energetic mid-palate. It felt like a younger wine next to its siblings, but with a polished structure. Finish is deep and hot with some residual bitterness which gradually disappears as it breathes. Aftertaste of fresh grape skin. I would recommend that this be aged further 3 years and it will last for at least a decade thereafter, if well kept.

Retasted in Oct 2021, nose and palate remain unchanged which is powerful and layered. Still going strong. Continue to drink with some decanting and will hold for the next 5 years if stored well. Amazing vintage for the Zippy Block. No change in score.

  • Needs about 3 hours in the decanter to open up, removes a little heat and oak burns off a bit. This is a big Western Barossan wine, big black ripe fruits, bramble, cassis and blackberries. Pair with a steak for sure. At its peak but holding up very well, drink over the next 5 years.
