Domaine René Engel Dinner (Fleur de Sel, Tras Street): This is a wine that really divided the table. I thought it was by far the most stubborn and least pleasing of the line-up. The nose really flattered to deceive, with a lovely deep waft of wood spice and dark flowers, along with cool black cherry aromas and touches of green herb and dried earth. A really nice nose. Unfortunately, the palate, in spite of having qutie a bit of depth to it, seemed rather surly, tight, almost one-dimensional, with muted black-fruited shades on a slightly meaty, mushroomy backdrop. A little bit of spice added some interest on the sides, otherwise, this seemed rather simple for a Grand Cru at this age. It did not help that the wine had a very masculine, grippy structure to it as well, with drying, tea-leafy tannins and overlaid with obvious acidity, all adding to give the wine a rather rustic, grumpy feel at its finish. A decent enough wine, with the depth and structure to age well, but clearly a large step behind everything else that was served on the night. I think it will improve though, but it needs a lot of time yet. This is one to set aside and try again in 5-6 years. Hopefully, the fruit will last long enough for the wine to soften somewhat.

Much brighter colour (than Bass P), pale; fragrant, expressive, with farmyard undertones, though effectively cleaner; distinct earthy note, not unattractive, rounded, fresh, clean fruit; hard edge to finish, extended length. May improve with time, losing edgy finish? Score 16.

Burgundy Pairs (Le Colombier, London): Reticent, but there was a pure cherry fragrance here, a lot of tannin, just beginning to emerge, classy

Slightly brunt rubber nose but lovely limpid, classy colour and palate impression.
