I thought I caught a whiff of TCA on the nose but didn’t find it after and the palate seemed closed but not clipped. Very young. Still embryonic , honey peach.

Served side by side with the 2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Spätlese, this was the richer, creamier of the two, but still had excellent spine. The core was classic Wehlener Sonnenuhr lemon cream, and age brought a bit of brûlée to the party. Still so much material here, but I very much like where it is now.

Biryani night (Chicago, IL): This isn't the best plot of Selbach-Oster's, but this is nonetheless a splendid bottle. There are nascent secondary characteristics starting to emerge -- there's a slight bit of funk and some petrol notes here. Great fresh acidity, and still some fruit here, with just a mild hint of sweetness remaining. In a great spot now, but probably some room for improvement with age as well.

This was consumed due to discovering it was a leaker when I transferred it from one cellar to another and had it on a top rack. Fortunately, I caught it the same day I made the transfer, but not before it had soiled quite a number of other bottles (that I was planning to sell). Alas, now I'm forced to consume them <vbg>! And this one as well. Surprisingly this was pretty damn good. Not quite to the level of other recent notes or my last note, but it was not flawed. Definitely mature and without the zippy acidity of youth. I didn't keep notes, but had it with family with another bottle in reserve and didn't need to open that other one. I noticed that another Selbach-Oster, the 2002 W-S Spatlese also is leaking. Anyone else note this from this producer?

(Selbach-Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese) Light medium yellow color; nice spicy stone fruit, light petrol note, ripe lemon, mineral and lime cream nose; tasty, well balanced, ripe and tart stone fruit, apricot palate with luscious edges and a touch of orange; medium finish
