  • Lost some vitality, more marmeladeish.

  • Nothing like Chicago hospitality...; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016: Is this reverse prädikat creep? This does not taste like Auslese - the flavours and palate presence are much closer to Spätlese or even a very ripe Kabinett. The flavours are tart but classic Saar - lots of green apple, limes, lemons, and pears with a slate and stony mineral base underneath, and higher toned herbal and faintly leafy accents that develop with more time. There's not much residual sugar apparent here and the acidity is immense, so this comes across just barely off-dry (the '95 Scharzhofberger Spätlese I recently opened was much sweeter than this). It's a bit of a shock given my usual expectations for EM Auslese, but the wine itself is still fantastic with remarkable purity and focus to the flavours, and impressive length.

  • Salil does Chicago 2; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016 (Chicago, IL): #27-91, 8% abv. That'll teach you to open a bottle of auction GKA the day before the regular Auslese... compared to the 1994 auction GKA, this is such a major step down. This is almost more Spätlese in style than Auslese, and there's almost no hint of botrytis either. This is a lean, green, and mean Auslese. Good minerality here, this is just surprisingly thin and light-bodied and very atypical for an Auslese. While this is good, it's just not what it ought to be. Very disappointing.

  • Amber +1 color. When wine is this good, words nearly fail me. Exquisite nose. Wonderful sweetness, a firm acidity, barest hint of botrytis and exceptionally balanced in the mouth between delicacy and power. Endless finish. Bowed heads around the table for this very rare tasting experience, a near perfect Saar wine. Oh my. Bottle #2 of two.

  • Fantastic. Petrol nose, luscious tropical fruits. Exceptional wine. Got better through the evening.
