Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 70 notes)

Tasted by mghomula on 1/5/2010 & rated 91 points: (170 views)
Tasted by nvandyk on 12/12/2009 flawed bottle: Corked (328 views)
Tasted by mghomula on 11/6/2009: I am so amazed at this wine. It is such an incredible example of Viognier and it is hard to believe it is Central Coast and not Rhone. Still an intense nose of peach, apricot, orange blossom, honey and a bouquet of spice. On the palate the big alcohol is well hidden behind a medium bodied palate of apricot, peach, orange rind, white flowers and baking spices. Rich but with the right amount of acidity to balance it all out. I still think this needs to be consumed by Spring of 2010 but it is possible this might last a bit past that time. Excellent!  Tasted by Veraison on 9/10/2009 & rated 87 points: 15.5% ABV. Light golden appearance. High toned lemon apricot nose, similar attack. This wine is rather pinched on the palate - where I might want some broad lush stone fruit flavors, it gives up lean lemony apricot and minerals. I find the apparent ripeness of the grapes (15.5%) and the tangy acidity difficult to reconcile on the palate. Pretty good, but not sad this is my last bottle. (773 views)

Tasted by arthrovine on 8/21/2009 & rated 92 points: (748 views)
Tasted by vinole on 8/21/2009 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous notes (915 views)
Tasted by cunni001 on 8/10/2009 & rated 93 points: still love it (975 views)
Tasted by cunni001 on 8/4/2009 & rated 93 points: Still very outstanding, great fruit without the excesses of nose and taste, with a great structure that is refreshing and mouthfilling (1016 views)
Tasted by dfeiner on 7/27/2009 & rated 89 points: Floral, dried fruit, melon and a bit of hazel nut on the nose. Very rich. A bit of sherry flavor. Some acidity and more tropical or dried fruits. This might prove a bit on the heavy side. See how it works with dinner. (1083 views)
 Tasted by cunni001 on 7/27/2009 & rated 93 points: (924 views)
 Tasted by cunni001 on 7/20/2009 & rated 92 points: (978 views)
Tasted by Martyrizzo on 7/18/2009 & rated 87 points: (933 views)
Tasted by mghomula on 7/7/2009: Incredibly consistent with previous notes. (1189 views)
Tasted by Doublebass on 7/4/2009 & rated 91 points: (1018 views)
Tasted by Martyrizzo on 7/4/2009 & rated 87 points: (1006 views)
Tasted by wallnib on 6/30/2009 & rated 93 points: quite aromatic with big explosive flavors on the honeyed tropical side of the spectrum. The effect is starting to get quite edgy, whereas previous bottles were more plush and smooth... the alcohol is indeed starting to rear it's head. I'm glad I have one left, but two would be too many at this point... (1322 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 6/27/2009: Rich and aromatic, loaded with white flowers and honeysuckle; needs to be kept cool in order to keep the massive 15.5 behnd the scenes. Great Cali Viognier, drink now. (1289 views)
Tasted by mghomula on 6/25/2009 & rated 92 points: Very consistent with most recent TN on 5/24/09. This very much needs to be consumed within the next 6-8 months. (1299 views)
Tasted by cunni001 on 6/23/2009 & rated 94 points: still very bright, mineral and full flavored, no perfume overtones, long finish (1348 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/15/2009: 2007 Novy Syrah Party + A Pile Of Other Things (The Murray Casa): Glycerine texture, orangle blossom, honey. There is a tangerine/orange element to the fruit and some apricot. As with past vintages, I really like the flavors this wine shows and again, 2008 seems to have it. (1435 views)
 Tasted by jkramer65 on 6/6/2009 & rated 92 points: (1192 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 5/25/2009 & rated 89 points: Nice gold color. Lots of nuts on the nose, along with citrus (literally like sticking your nose in a bowl of mixed citrus). Quite a good nose, though lacking a floral component that I always like in Condrieu. The citrus really carries forward on the palate, like biting into a genetically merged tangerine and lemon. The wine is big (but with enough acidity to keep it from being flabby) with an oily mouthfeel. Loads of alcohol (15.5%) though actually it is mostly under control to the point where this is almost refreshing. Not sure I can manage more than a glass or two of it. Thumbs up to Melville for a very good QPR, and one of the better American Viognier's. (1507 views)
Tasted by mghomula on 5/24/2009 & rated 91 points: Very similar to previous tasting notes. Floral nose of orange blossom with apricot and peach. The flavor profile was apricot, peach, some minerality, caramelized sugar, grapefruit and touch fo the pine nuts from before. Really excellent flavor profile but this time the alcohol reared its head and was a bit more present than previous tastings. Still outstanding but given the touch of heat that wasn't present before I would say drink this now. 50+5+14+16+6=91 (1482 views)

In 1989, Melville Vineyards, a family owned and operated enterprise was founded in Sonoma County's Knights Valley, where Ron Melville grew high quality, much sought after Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1996, Ron's desire to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay brought Melville Vineyards to Lompoc's Sta. Rita Hills, located in the western Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California. The Sta. Rita Hills appellation is where Ron Melville and his sons Brent and Chad Melville decided to develop their estate vineyards and winery. Since then, they have also developed an interest in Rhone varietals, particularly Northern Rhone Syrah and Viognier. The Melville estate achieves quality through the integrity of its farming practice and its respect to the microclimate.
Definition of "white wine" at Epicurious.com
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Enjoying Viognier
In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
