Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2022 Edition; 10/14/2022-10/16/2022 (Piedmont, Italy): Opened and served. The wine ticks a lot of boxes of good Barolo, good ripe too, cherry feel, less tar, starting to show secondary touches. Good brightness too and time should help albeit not sure how much better this gets vs today. For sure a good 91-92
Pop and pour. A modern-styled barolo that seems fully mature. On the nose: coffee, black licorice, blood orange, tar, but the coffee/toast is dominant. On the palate: tar and aggressive, grainy tannin, which quickly smothers any fruit in a thick coat of dark chocolate and toast. Very grainy tannin on the finish, which strangely ends slightly watery. One more bottle, but best to drink it sooner rather than later.

Tasted at winery. Darker coffee brown. Totally mature nose of chocolate, autumn leaves and tobacco. This was made during the period when rotory fermenters and small oak were popular at this estate and it shows with darker colour, sweet entry with mouth-coating tannins. Some bitter green extract on the finish.

Big pour from Coravin followed for almost an hour - started a little tight with lots of energy, depth and mature red berry intensity... as it loosened up it became a little less serious and a little easier to enjoy.
