  • Dinner at Steve & Barb's house. Nailed blind, well not exactly as it also involved knowing my good friend Steve extremely well. Given the '59 Huet being corked and that this was my birthday weekend and that Steve had this in his cellar, nailing it blind was easy once the Chenin showed itself on the nose. Light to medium bodied, the nose screamed out aged Chenin. Quince, powder, resin were all present. Extremely grapey finish, rather unusual. Quite remarkable for 42 year old wine from a bad vintage and a mediocre producer. I would drink these up in the next 3 years or so as it was very good today but seemed like it could break down soon. 50+12+11+8+8 = 89

  • Tasted double blind. Clearly this was very old; however, it's still holding up well, if you like this style of wine. Rather tense and hard, with notes of hay, faint petrol, wax, quinine and lemon peel. Always fun to try something like this.

  • Golden-yellow in colour with no signs of brown. Very slightly cloudy. Apples, pears, lemon, honey and a bit of varnish and a spirity character on the nose. Intense on the front of the palate but backs away and trails off short towards the end. More mineraly than sweet as well as being a touch tart. Good, not great, but enough to perk my interest in Vouvray region wines.

  • My Birthday Celebration at Steve & Barb's house (Greensboro, NC): Medium yellow in the glass. Still well alive and showing slightly sweet. Waxy. Nice foil to the cheese. Medium bodied and a minerally palate. Medium length finish. Very nice today but it doesn't seem like it will go much longer. 50+11+11+8+8 = 88

  • New Year's Eve at Steve & Barb's house: At this point my palate was starting to go downhill in a hurry. I would have liked to have tried this under better circumstances. Medium yellow in color, not really showing as a 40 year old wine. Started a little tight but opened some with a few minutes in the glass. Soft, but far from gone. What would a great vintage taste like ( when my palate wasn't shot )? 50+11+10+7+7 = 85.
