  • Soft rose petal aroma, tea on the palate, a very classic and lovely wine.

  • Badly flagging now for its pedigree, the 66 Leroy GE at least goes though several phases, some of which are more enjoyable than others. But even at its best, the Vosne spice profile is dogged by a nasty metallic seaweed note and there’s a strange languid character to the palate. Maybe better bottles out there, but I wouldn’t chase them based on this.

  • Grands-Echézeaux Dinner (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Mature and lovely. This had such a deep, ripe nose, with complex aromas of coffee, mushrooms and sous bois, herb and broiled meat, and then plenty of sweet black cherries and berries. Tons of character on this. The palate was still very full and fresh - amazingly so for a 1966 - with velvet tannins draped around a core of black cherries and berries, earth, meat and spice. This had a masculine character to it, but was matched with a pure, transparent feel - really charming, elegant almost. Nice finish too, with sweet floral notes coming out alongside the meatier, spicier tones. A lovely, ageless expression. I must say that it suffered a little being put next to two much younger, and slightly more vibrant DRC Grand-Echezeaux, but that this held its own and stood-out really says something. A real treat.

  • Stunning wine. Lovely perfume wafting from the glass. Red berries, blue fruit, spice and perfect balance. Amazing concentration for such an old wine - how does Lalou do it?? Nice solid finish with a core of red and black fruit. Structure still there which makes this wine so perfectly balanced even at 53 years old. Peak drinking now zero signs of decline.

  • Intense rose petal, a touch of earth, and some smoky notes interweave. Held up beautifully in the glass over 90 minutes or so, this is really in a lovely spot. Classic and brilliant.

(Leroy Grands Echezeaux) Nose of truffly underbrush and sweet cherry fruit. The ultimate in sous-bois. Just captivating. You swish it around your mouth and there is pretty decent inner mouth excitement but the finish is where this wine really takes off. An incremental finish that never really ends. Peaking and stunning.
