My 3rd and final go around with this wine, and each was thrilling. LTHB was always made to age (I believe adding press wine up till 82 vintage), and I’ve often been as impressed with old vintages of this as I am with LMHB and HB. This was no exception
VTS fill, cork in excellent shape, it poured to a transparent ruby color, with no bricking. The aromas were gorgeous and it tasted as it looked….still fresh, energetic, balanced, but with tannins fully resolved. Brambly, earthy, tobacco notes, with great precision. Really fantastic, and renewed my enthusiasm for continuing to age my best 82s

The problem with this bottle was the VA, which marred what otherwise could be a very good wine. Still, there is concentration, depth, vivacity and layers of tart, fresh, ripe, smoky, ash and tar nuanced berries. I imagine a clean bottle of this would be a knockout.

Still with real life, savory masculine character might have softened a little to those fortunate enough to have followed this. For those of us fortunate to have come along 56 years later there's plenty of sweet dark fruit, coffee and a friendly bite of tannin. The finish softens and gets some lift from the acidity which might be the only reminder we're dealing with a wine that otherwise seems half its age.
Note for those who use Coravin....50 year old cork doesn't maintain enough elasticity

Odds and ends in Munich (Munich, Käfer's): Slightly rustic, not sure whether this is down to the bottle or whether their 1959 was just not as long-lived as you would expect. The fruit was gone and the wine was pretty tart with some earthy flavours.

Vts fill. Dark purple and some brown in the color
Powerful aromas of plum, earth and oak.
