  • Surprisingly consistent notes on this bottle as with the last bottle we had 2 weeks ago, but then again, not too much time has passed and I really wouldn't expect this wine to age. The only thing I'd add to the prior note is that the aromas are very distinct - not in the overwhelming, in your face, way that some NZ sauv blancs can be, but just how clearly I can distinguish the predominant grapefruit and fresh cut grass scents... Anyway, here's the prior note for reference "Clear, pale, lemon yellow color. Very aromatic nose of grapefruit, lime, fresh cut grass and some floral and mineral notes. Grapefruit, lime, green apple and grassy flavors dominate, but there's some interesting wet slate/mineral character at the finish. Gripping, but not overwhelming acidity forms the backbone of this light-medium bodied wine. Very enjoyable"

  • Nose on this falls somewhere between Marlborough and Sancere, with that grassy NZ thing layered over some pungent grapefruit. The palate has sharp acidity, very crisp grapefruit and a whole lot of minerality. Somebody described it as "spritely" over dinner, and the minerality and acidity are so intense that this does take on an almost effervescent quality. One of the better North Fork whites I've tried to date. 88-89.

This has a clean, white asparagus nose. Not a bad sauvignon. It’s got a nice crispness. Solid flavours with some structure. But I can’t see Long Island becoming a world centre for sauvignon blanc on the evidence of this wine.

New York Cork Report

  • By Lenn Thompson
1/1/2009, (See more on New York Cork Report...) 3.5 out of 5 stars

(Macari Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Katherine's Field) It pours an extremely pale greenish-yellow in the glass and offers intense aromas of grapefruit, lemon and lime zest with understated hints of just-cut grass and crushed Thai basil leaves. The palate is mouthwatering crisp and similarly citrusy, with fresh grapefruit and sweet lime flavors accented by a seawater minerality and more of that grassy-herbal character -- but not too much. The balance between flavor, texture and lively acidity is impressive and the finish lingers nicely. If you want to discuss this wine in terms of global style, I'd say that it lives somewhere between Sancerre and New Zealand.
