The last 2001 in my collection, tasted on 14 September 2008. I probably won't ever have another one. Ultimately a little disappointing - this great wine is past its peak. The colour is sensational - easily the most alluring I've ever seen in a Mas d'en Compte - an incredibly deep, dark copper colour that's perfectly clean and bright. Nose is classic Mas d'en Compte: apricots, honey, almonds, vanilla, but it lacks acidity on the palate and the finish is a bit flabby and lacks assertiveness. It's short, but you can just get that wonderful oily, voluptuous and sensual mouthfeel that this wine characteristically offers, with minor sensations of peaches and cream. Good, but sadly past its peak. It was kept in a fairly favourable environment, so we can safely infer that the life of Mas d'en Compte (2001 being a very good vintage) is not more than about five or six years. It's possible that in a "perfect" cellar environment it might last a decade. The lack of acidity is the problem. Still, a memorable wine!

thanks to dos cabezos winemaker todd bostock for throwing this ringer into the mix. it stumped everyone (not that hard). it had a sauivignon blanc lightness to it, but a thicker mouthfeel. a little too fruity for me on a daily basis. i enjoyed this because i would never try it on my own, and that is the beauty of offlines.
