  • This has been a very disappointing purchase - bought direct from the winery in Piesport in 1998. 4 bottles, all the previous three suffering from some degree of oxidation. So I approached this last bottle expecting to be disappointed.
Things didn't start well when the cork fell straight into the bottle the moment the corkscrew touched it. So the cork's had scarcely any effect in 12 years. But riesling is a resilient, tough old girl. The colour is remarkably good - a deepish yellow gold. The nose feels more old than obviously oxidised, but the muting of the riesling fruit and minerality does point to a degree of oxidation. Oddly rather less than previous bottles, despite this being kept rather longer. She's a capricious old girl is riesling sometimes! There's a touch of soap on the nose (which *is* from the wine, not the glass or decanter) that's not entirely attractive. Really quite sweet on the palate. I can taste a touch of oxidation, but the oxidation is most obvious in the scalping of flavours. Drinkable, but with no huge pleasure.
