  • Day later from memory. Enforced confinement has me with so much time I am second-guessing every bottle I open. This seemed like one of those wines where you think when you pull it, oops, did I leave this in here too long? Then I reminded myself it was '05 and figured I'd be in for early maturity and some nice secondary flavors in a humble appellation like this.

Wrong Beaune Breath. Since I didn't really apply myself I won't attempt details, but this was all primary all the time. Crazy fresh on the nose with nothing but dark red berried and cherry fruit, a lovely texture and very gentle tannins. That's what left me puzzled. How can it smell and taste so young and seemingly have no tannin left? The secret seemed to lie on the tingling acid that left a distinct impression on the outsides of my tongue. When a wine has it all, like '05 red Burgundies do, there appear to be multiple paths to graceful aging, or maybe it's like some kind of Peter Pan syndrome. My extremely spotty recordkeeping shows this bottle was purchased by my brother on winebid for $20 and given to me in 2011. That's just silly.

  • Are you having a "hard" time with '05 Red Burgundy, that is, finding the wines are "hard," which I think means closed and tannic? I'm not, but I keep reading vague commentary from experts to that effect, which feels kind of like a drive by shooting

I'm lucky that I have a few bottles of entry level '05's around to experiment with, and feel safe in the assumption that they won't be hard, or at least I won't have sacrificed the equivalent of a mortgage payment if they prove to be. Speaking of which, if you want confirmation that the end of the world is nigh, I received an Acker email this morning offering a three day food and wine event in NY for $26,000 per person, not including transportation or accommodations (sorry, I meant $25,999). The best part? You need to email David Hamburger to reserve your spot! That's too good to be true. Time to unsubscribe.

Color a pretty translucent red, with some slight pink highlights at the rim. Captivating nose, which is decidedly not hard! Really quite alluring, with a lilting mix of cherry, raspberry, and citrus and light forest so attractive it actually forced me to smile. This is still somehow largely primary, a tribute to how even low ranking appellations can shine in this glorious vintage. Beautifully lithe on the palate, everything in balance. If every Cote de Beaune Villages tasted like this, I'm not sure I'd need to drink anything else.

Again referencing its humble appellation, the only knock on the wine if we can call it that is there isn't more complexity. It's perfect though for what it is.

Edit: Hahaha. After posting, I see that I am one of only two people to write notes about this wine over a 10 year period. There are four notes and three are mine, entered over a 7 year stretch, and they are remarkably consistent: even the stupid scores are identical. I bet I couldn't do that again if I tried. It seems I like it.

  • Pale red, mostly translucent. Engaging nose full of red-berried fruit and underbrush with a bit of peppery spice. Lovely texture and mouthfeel, balanced and harmonious delivery of fruit and iron-driven minerals with gentle tannins. In short, another delicious '05 drinking beautifully right now, elegant and sophisticated, and it's just a modest Cotes de Beaune Villages on its 10th birthday. Labeled 12.5% ABV, and you can tell even if you don't believe it. Will '05 wonders never cease.

  • Expressive, spicy, cinnamon, maybe slightly bretty nose. Great red and black cherry fruit, red bean, baking spices. Nice acidity, not much tannin. No tertiary flavors yet and I think this has plenty of material to warrant waiting another five years or so for them to develop. A nice peek at an '05 and I like what I see.

  • Why is '05 great? Let me count the ways. All right, this isn't really a wine to wax poetic over, but it sure is good. What makes it so different than other vintages? We'll know that with more conviction in another 5 years when we can start popping premier crus, but for entry level wines like this I find such a beautiful roundness to them, a seamless quality in which all elements harmonize, so it doesn't really matter much about the depth of material as the overall balance and structure. This has a spicy, tingly, woodsy note to the nose along with ripe pinot fruit. It's medium bodied at best, but you wouldn't expect more. There's still plenty of acid to keep it lively and fresh. Red berry flavors in a persistent and tart finish. Very drinkable. Serve this to me in a bistro with roast chicken and see ya'.
