  • Wine dinner at Modena, DC. While I don't have detailed notes, this wine is definitely on the other side of the mountain on its way down. Having said that both my wife and I enjoyed the rustic, smoky, mushroom, meat, blood nuances that showed its age. Some thought corked but I would argue almost but don't mistake what you think to be corked for a classic aged Burgundy. Is it close to terminal velocity, yes, but it was fun to drink. Would I want to try this in a more recent vintage, yes.

Having said the above I won't score the wine because my judgement may be off and I don't want to be unfair to the wine.

  • A Post 50th Birthday Celebration with Friends (The Grunzweig Wine Room, Los Olivos): The oldest Burgundy I've had the pleasure of trying, I approached this bottle with a combination of apprehension and humility after a slow-ox of some 8 hours. Thus began a true E-Ticket ride as the wine strutted its stuff with confidence and pride. The wine was darker in the glass than the '85 Remoissenet Bonnes-Mares served alongside it. The bouquet was initially dominated by a bit of barnyard funk, then menthol and pencil lead emerged. Later I observed distinct notes of chocolate and espresso. The wine was heavier on the palate than I expected, a real tour de force. Baked raspberry, fine herbs, cola, some ferrous aspects and bouillon were among the flavors detected. Amazing heft and an infinite finish. Never faded through the last drop. My WOTN, though consensus awarded that title to its younger sister.

  • Woah. Bottle in great shape: wine drinkers dream - tattered, barely legible label, high fill, dark colour. Wine itself: opened for 30 minutes and then the fireworks started: immense nose of wild raspberry (a bit like La Tache but there I find more strawberry) and gorgeously long, supple palate of arrestingly secondary characters. Just a stunning, stunning bottle of wine. Best bottle of Richebourg I've ever had.
