Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 26 notes)

Tasted by mtaczak on 7/25/2010 & rated 89 points: 6 months more made a lot of difference - sour grapes were gone and while not especially complex, this is quite enjoyable. Densely tannic with an impressively long finish, this is a great value. (242 views)
Tasted by SDWineLovers on 7/8/2010 & rated 88 points: Equally earthy and fruity. The wine was note for note with Cameron's tasting notes, so I'm quoting him here. Don't mistake the notes thinking they imply this wine is sweet like a dessert wine. "Huge notes of toasty vanilla oak, chocolate, cigar smoke, and molten licorice. The wine soars across your palate with immense complexity, mingling chocolate, earth, and licorice gumdrops. It's massively structured, intense and concentrated with big, grainy tannins that are perfectly melded to a mineral component, cigar smoke, toffee, and earthy fruit." (353 views)

Tasted by mtaczak on 2/24/2010 & rated 88 points: Pop and pour revealed a nose with distinct oak and typical Tempranillo characteristics, but this blew off pretty quickly to leave behind something pretty generic. First taste was pretty tannic in the mid-palate but the finish was short, with soft, round cherry and maybe some charcoal. Leather and vanilla on the nose. A bit of a "sour grapes" flavor on the finish that lasts uncomfortably long.

As it warmed up and got some air the tannins came out to play, making this nice and chewy. The sour grapes are still around, but they actually became a nice counterpoint to the tannins. Not especially complex, but for $10-12 this is a great value.

The cork revealed this wine to be Bodegas Covila Rioja II Crianza. (954 views)

Tasted by Grillgod on 11/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Dark purple in color. Slight hint of blackberry, boysenberry, & black pepper. Structure is a little thin, not feeling much tannins or acid. Mild blackberry/boysenberry on palate, but thin and not much finish. Tannins begin to emerge and nice focused blackberry flavor on the palate. Overall 88, but 90 for the fruit and 86 for the tannin/acid structure. With this nice fruit perhaps there is hope for the future. (1289 views)

Tasted by jasonrsa on 10/28/2009 & rated 88 points: Quite nice and good QPR. Opened for 30 minutes and poured through Vinturi. Strong caramel, oak, and leather, with a bit of raspberry and smoke on the nose. Continues on the palate with more red fruit coming out, though oak is a bit strong. Well-integrated tannins. Drinking very nicely. For me, would be a point or two higher without the dominant oak. (1414 views)

Tasted by neurovino on 8/18/2009 & rated 91 points: This wine has improved with age. (1583 views)
Tasted by Grillgod on 8/2/2009 & rated 88 points: Black fruit and a touch of dill on the nose. Tasty fruit with just a touch of tannins on the palate. Lacked balance by itself, but went well with cheese/crackers and almonds. (1600 views)

Tasted by bahiadave on 2/9/2009: this is very good. actually tastes like a bordeuex. (1926 views)
Tasted by neurovino on 1/25/2009 & rated 90 points: Not sure it this wine was a little more settled than last time or if my expectations adjusted downward from the last bottle, but I enjoyed it more. Others commented on it positively, too. (1934 views)
Tasted by neurovino on 1/8/2009 & rated 89 points: Opened up quite a bit about 3 hours after I popped the cork. Not sure if that was due to warmer temp, oxygen, or both. I liked it more at that point. (1981 views)
Tasted by Oski98 on 12/30/2008 & rated 91 points: Opened and poured a glass with the remainder distributed to a decanter (room temp 67 F). The juice offers a deep ruby color, with a rose rim. Interesting nose. I'm getting a bit of spice, maybe some raspberry components, and upon further reflection, hints of the smoke suggested by CH. Lot 93 is definitely pleasant with no overpowering alcohol smell, which more often than not appears to be present in CH offerings (this Tempranillo weighs in at 13.5%; I may be wrong, but I have the impression that CH wines often are in the 14.0%+ area). I am a bit disappointed with the flavor and finish relative to other reviews . . . and decide to let this open up a bit . . . "Disappointed" is a bit much, but so was CH’s use of the words "massively structured" (kudos to neurovino for pointing out CH "hyperbole"). That threw me, an admitted novice, off a bit. I would say that all the suggested flavors (chocolates, leather, smoke, earthy fruit) are present, but in a much more subtle capacity. That said, this wine is wonderfully complex and interesting and I look forward to evaluating it's evolution (though I'm not sure it would hold up until 2024 . . . how about 2014?). I will be buying more since my math suggests this is a great value even at $21. (1903 views)

Taste: Holy cow – you’ve never smelled a wine like this. It’s like dessert on the nose with huge notes of toasty vanilla oak, chocolate, cigar smoke and molten licorice. The wine soars across your palate with immense complexity mingling chocolate, earth, and licorice gumdrops. It’s massively structured, intense and concentrated with big, grainy tannins perfectly melded to a mineral component, cigar smoke, toffee and earthy fruit. The finish goes on and on for 2-3 minutes with excellent focus and concentration. Magnificent.

Cameron Confidential: Another gem from winemaker John. I remember initially tasting the wine with COO Doug and him commenting “best Spanish wine I have ever tasted”. I have to agree. In fact, I think it is one of the best wines we have ever offered if not the best. The producer is a co-op with over 450 hectares of fruit in production and this wine is the best they have to offer. It has tremendous class and purity and has been rewarded with numerous best of show and gold medals across Europe. The wine is only made in exceptional vintages and has not been produced since the 2000 vintage. This wine has my highest recommendation.
About Red Wines

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
