2nd Dinner in La Mere Germaine Chateauneuf-du-Pape: Ripe dark berries, almost overripe, some tea and celery. Very full bodied, ok acidity and tannin. I have the impression the wine is already a bit past its peak. No score.

This was my No. 2 wine in the blind tasting. During voting a lot of people announced they hated it, which surprised me. This and the Vieux Telegraphe seemed to be the clear strandouts among the six wines tasted blind. . It seemed like it was a muscular, rustic wine being tamed with age. Some nice herbal notes. It didn't exactly cream Rhone but it seemed to be in the ballpark, Nice finish.

Loads of mushroom and truffle on the nose as well as forest floor and turned soil. Richly layered with flavors of roasted herbs, lavender, kirsch, and black fruits. Sweet tannins and a wonderful texture. It has a spicy, peppery finish as well as savory qualities, like roasted meat, truffle and foie gras. Evolving, wonderfully balanced and delicious!
