Very typical old Riesling nose of red spices, old, sugar, and apple/pear, burnt sugar. Definitely showing its age on the palate with more burnt sugar - brulee, new sugar and spice. Aged but tasty and still alive. Finish shows apple, spice, and sugar. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

Grand Sich excess: Very good, but a bit below expectations for a '71 Rheingau Auslese. Lots of ripe tropical fruit, apricot, and citrus flavours tinged with honey, orange peel, and botrytis spice notes, but the fruit feels a bit tired and desiccated and this doesn't have enough acidity to really balance the still-ample sweetness. Pleasant, but not great.
