Black fruit, currants and vanilla on the nose. Restrained tart black fruit, currant, and cocoa/vanilla mid palate, still a bit tight after 30-45 minutes in the glass but continued to open. Fruit began to reassert itself but never very boldly. Tannic and finishing long with a very tart and dry close. UPDATE: I had about half a bottle left, which I vacuum sealed and put in the refrigerator for about 36 hours. After returning it to room temperature, the fruit on the nose and on the palate were a little more evident. I also detected an earthiness on the nose that may have been there before, but was more pronounced after the resting period. It retained a spicy note towards the back of the palate and on the finish. All this suggests to me that it may still need a number of years in the bottle to reach its peak. Based on this additional experience, I'm going to increase my rating from 86 to 88.
Let breathe two hours. Nose showed strong bell pepper and dark fruit. Mid-weight on the palate, fruit forward punch of candied dark berries, earth and bell pepper, with little to no finish. Vacuvin-ed last glass for next night and it showed hot tart thin sour cherry. A low $20's purchase at Costco a few years back, happy to have held.
